Physiotherapy

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy describes the field of Physiotherapy relating to treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. This includes disorders affecting bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves.
It is a natural mechanical therapy using hands-on joint and tissue mobilisation skills and exercise prescription with the aim of restoring normal skeletal movement and function.

Mechanotherapy was first described in 1890 as “the employment of mechanical means for the cure of disease”. Nowadays we consider Physiotherapy to utilise the application of mechano-transduction for the stimulation of tissue repair and re-modelling. In short, “Exercise is Medicine”!!

Just like our heating has a thermostat, our body has a “mechanostat”. This is the body’s way of sensing and regulating loading within the body. By activating the body’s mechanical sensors, we can promote healing, and restore normality to function.

Sports Massage

The primary purpose of sports massage is to alleviate the cumulative effects of stress and strain within the body’s tissues, which may lead to bigger injuries. These stresses can build up as a consequence of prolonged or high intensity exercise, as a compensation strategy following an injury, or as a gradual build up of stresses over a period of weeks or months due to postural strain or even emotional stress. It is not only indicated for high level sports people or even social athletes, but for anyone with a physical job, or those with ongoing physical or emotion strain.

There are three major ways in which sports massage can be effective:

Maintenance

As part of a regular treatment programme, sports massage can be used to concentrate on particular muscle groups used prominently in certain sports, as a means of maintaining and improving flexibility and range of motion.

Pre- and Post-Event

Sports massage can be used to compliment an athlete’s warm up for events, to reduce muscle tension and increase circulation, assisting in reducing injury risk. Also can be used post-event to reduce feelings of stiffness, and reduce metabolic build up, which can assist the body’s recovery process.

Rehabilitation

Many soft tissue techniques are effective in assisting the rehabilitation process. Specific soft tissue techniques can be employed to assist with acute and chronic injury recovery. They are used to coincide with other Physiotherapy techniques to assist return to full function.

Pilates

Pilates improves the endurance of the deepest layers of muscles around our joints that control movements at those joints and work to give us good posture.

Additional benefits include:

  • prevention of injury
  • minimising posture related pain
  • improving balance and coordination
  • enhancing athletic performance
  • toning of muscles
  • improvements in flexibility

Control and manage back pain, improve athletic performance

There is sound evidence based research showing the stabilising effects on joints by activating deep postural muscles.

Athletes from all sports are incorporating Pilates based training and rehabilitation into their routines. At high level competition it may give you the extra edge or it might be the ultimate saviour for that chronic back problem that keeps returning.
